England left-armer Monty Panesar has said he has bowled the delivery occasionally in domestic matches. He did, however, finish his career with 629 first-class wickets, not bad for a late bloomer to the art of spin. Although he would introduce it to first-class cricket in 1900, it wasn't the danger delivery it's known as today. In the test series against Sri Lanka in 2014, the English spin bowler Moeen Ali bowled a doosra making him the first English spinner to do so in an international match. In this section, we attempt to explain these and more of such common variations used by spinners today to keep the batsman guessing.
In this variation, the ball does not turn off the pitch appreciably. The doosra is the off-spinner's equivalent of the leg-spinner's googly, which spins in the opposite direction to the leg spinner's stock ball. The batsmen goes to play it into the off-side, but instead of moving away it moves back in to clean bowl the batsmen, making him look a touch silly in the process. It is also referred to as a Bosie, in honour of its inventor Bernard Bosanquet. His technique was noted for causing more spin than speed, to his personal preference. After changing his action under ICC's rules he became an ineffective bowler and subsequently dropped from national team. To do this, he would use variations of spin to confuse his opponent. Users include Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan, Indian Harbhajan Singh, and South African Johan Botha. In this method, the ball is held in a grip that is similar to a seam bowler’s delivery (without the thumb). The direction of turn of the ball is dependent on the position of the centre finger. While Terry Jenner has been sceptical of Krejza's new addition he reportedly went on to say "if Jason Krejza has miraculously discovered a way to bowl the doosra without flexing his elbow, then he's a genius.". Some have suggested it was developed by another Oxford student as early as 1880, but never appeared in a first-class game. Proudly created with Wix.com, Bernard Bosanquet & The Invention of the Googly. However, if you're expecting it to spin away from you and it spins back towards you, it's an extremely difficult shot to adapt to and it often results in wickets falling. The grip for the googly is the same as the normal leg spin delivery, just like in a doosra, where it is like the traditional off-spin delivery. Difference Between Googly and Doosra ?? Apart from Saqlain Mushtaq, players like Muralitharan, Harbhajan Singh, Johan Botha and Saeed Ajmal have used the doosra to good effect. A googly (called the wrong-un in Australia) is nothing but a leg-spinner’s version of the doosra. To make doosra more effective it should be pitched on the middle and off stump line because the ball will move away from the batsman after pitching, if a right-hander is facing the ball. However, this is highly questioned now as the primary source material can't be found. Below you can see a delivery from Adil Rashid during the Big Bash. Thus, the carrom ball is indeed a mystery delivery as the ball can turn the way a normal off-spinner turns the ball, or in a way a traditional leg-spinner turns the ball, or not turn at all!
The delivery was invented by Pakistani cricketer Saqlain Mushtaq. While the video in question shows the ball turning in after hitting the footmarks and releasing a puff of dust on impact, Krejza has, in fact, admitted he is developing a doosra. I go to cricket coaching.
Or from the word guile, which is cunning, highly appropriate for a delivery designed to deceive. Invented by the Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, the doosra aims to confuse the batsman by spinning in the direction opposite to the traditional off-break. Any video in any web.. please help. In 2011, Saeed Ajmal said he had learned the art of teesra and was looking to use this delivery in upcoming matches. The most common theory is that Bernard knew that he wasn't going to hit the heady heights of international cricket as a fast bowler, so changed his style after playing a table-top game where the goal was to bounce a tennis ball on a table so your opponent at the other end couldn't catch it cleanly. Guys, I need to know how to ball googly and doosra. The whole point of a Googly is to completely baffle the batsmen. The doosra of Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh was the subject of an official report by match referee Chris Broad, on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Mark Benson, and TV umpire Mahbubur Rahman after the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Chittagong in December 2004. The wrist must be in a position opposite to that when a normal leg-break is bowled. However, it all started in England at the turn of the 20th century, when middling fast-medium bowler Bernard Bosanquet decided to try his hand at another style. A doosra is a particular type of delivery by an off-spin bowler in the sport of cricket. The only thing that changes when compared to the normal delivery is the change in the wrist position. A rule change was proposed and accepted at a meeting of ICC chief executives in early 2005, stating that any bowler may straighten the arm up to 15° (which was earlier 9° for spinners and 12° for seamers) and Muralitharan's doosra once again became a legal delivery.
The delegates at the meeting included former Test spinners Shane Warne, Stuart MacGill, Jim Higgs, Gavin Robertson, Terry Jenner, Peter Philpott and Ashley Mallett. Other famous exponents of the carrom ball include Ravichandran Ashwin and Sunil Narine. Other suggestions have cropped up over the years. The only place where the googly differs from the conventional leg-spin delivery is the change in wrist position. So an off-spinner will bowl a delivery which will spin from left to right for a right-handed batsman. The use of the doosra has faced a lot of controversies, with many criticizing that it cannot be bowled legally. He was a first-class cricketer for Middlesex between 1898 and 1919. However, he was banned in September 2014 after his action was deemed illegal for all deliveries by the ICC as part of the clampdown on illegal actions. It is possible for a left-armer (whose action mirrors that of an off-spinner) to bowl the doosra, which in this case would turn from off to leg. Pakistani all-rounder Shoaib Malik was also reported for his doosra before the first Test between Australia and Pakistan in December 2004. However, in April 2009, he was called for a re-assessment of his bowling action after the series in Australia. South African Johan Botha has been reported for his version of the doosra after the 3rd Test match against Australia in January 2006. Don't know what it means when a commentator mentions terms like ‘doosra’ and ‘googly’? The naming of the delivery is attributed to Moin Khan, the former Pakistani wicketkeeper, who would call on Saqlain Mushtaq to bowl the "doosra" (the other one) from behind the stumps. Krejza's doosra is flicked with the finger and comes from the front of the hand. It will pitch towards off-stump and then move into the legs. Subsequent biomechanical tests conducted at the University of Western Australia in Perth showed that Muralitharan was straightening his arm by angles of up to 10 degrees prior to delivering doosras, well outside the International Cricket Council (ICC) acceptable guideline of 5 degrees for spin bowlers. It's intended to baffle batsmen by spinning the ball the opposite way to what's expected. Sometimes when we talk, we use phrases that are very common in cricketing circles but may not be as familiar to the new or infrequent watcher. However, If there is a little extra turn in the wicket then a bowler might have to adjust his line to middle and leg stump.
